We are much obliged to the following for providing technical expertise, design ideas, and inspiration to develop our Blog and Member Forum.
Blog
Since this was our very first blog we did quite a bit of research to determine the best software for what we wanted to accomplish. Although there are numerous blogs, and programs to manage them, the key to selection for us was the ability to fine tune the layout and create our own design.
WordPress is the blog engine behind WeHateGringos.com The WordPress site gave us the information we needed to get the blog up and running. Next we visited all the major WordPress support sites for tips and ideas.
We reviewed almost a hundred themes and many of them were top notch designs. But none were exactly what we wanted for our site so we took parts of different themes and plugged them into WeHateGringos.com. The basic layout came from the Wordpress4 theme by www.layoutstudios.com. Some of the sidebar and other section components include code from the Jakarta theme by www.scarletblaze.com. Artwork for the background, headers and footers are original designs by ForTheCause.us.
Right now, we are using three Plug-ins including Editor Monkey, Fuzzy Recent Posts, and Post Teaser. I’m sure we will add more as needs arise.
Forum [coming soon]
As with our blog, we did a lot of research to find the best software to run our WeHateGringos Forum. The key criteria were complete control over layout and design. We wanted to ensure we could get in under the hood and set up the forum to have the same look and feel as the blog.
We selected PhpBB Forum for our software. We used almost all of the resources on the PhpBB website to help us learn the basics and then followed their links to other support websites. The general style we selected was Darkness designed by Griffin.
Special Tech Note
For almost 12 years we have been in love with pure HTML. Never once did we "lower" ourselves to use WYSIWYG software or even consider doing anything other than hand coding.
We knew we were limiting ourselves by all the time we consumed with writing HTML — and it was getting boring. In addition, with all our daily web work we were not able to set aside the time needed to just stop everything and teach ourselves new programming skills. Now, these past few weeks have brought us about face. Learning the intricacies of Style Sheets, PHP, XHTML, and the rest is exciting and we are hooked!
We have gone through weeks of testing, tweaking, and just changing things around to make it easier for both our readers, and us, to use WeHateGringos.com We know there are still a few tech problems to work out – mostly with incompatible browsers. And we will be adding many new features to our websites as we go along.
